Mother’s Day Epiphany

happy mothers day

Today is Mother’s day and as usual, I have a barrage of emotions. Some of you already know why and some might find out for the first time, today.

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.”

For this year and today, Nigerians are marking Mothering Sunday alongside other countries.

Personally, I would rather stay away from social media to avoid seeing loved up photos of family, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, followers, followings and fans, with their mothers, to avoid doubly missing my mother (God rest her kind soul). But as a blogger and an influencer working with various Digital Marketing/Advertising agencies for various brands, it’s been almost impossible to stay away. I am usually on one social media campaign or the other, trying to create special memories for Mothers through youths on social media who are ready to take on such opportunities on social media rather than just being a spectator, for brands that are sensitive enough to care about their customers. This year isn’t different as I am working with Terragon for Sunlight Nigeria on the SunlightShero campaign to commemorate this special day.sunlight Nigeria - Happy mothers day - elsieisy blog

If there is one thing I don’t do – it is hiding my struggles or pain. Its hard being me. My life is hard. Also, dealing with assumptions and presumptions from friends and colleagues is even more stressful. Have you ever wondered why people find it hard to understand an open book? Preconceived Mindset. But that’s a topic for another day.

However, yesterday, I was watching an interview the legendary Onyeka Onwenu granted to Plus TV Africa’s Tea Time (way before I joined the show) and it felt like I needed to hear her speak to remind me of my roots and my backbone – God.

“When you have this realization that it’s not about you, then you know that every opportunity that comes your way, either good or bad, there is something to be learned from it. So if you have a challenging situation, you know that you have a father in heaven whose grace covers you, who gives you talent and opportunity. He never promised an absolutely easy life. But he did promise – whatever challenges coming your way, he’s already won it for you.”

Her words brought me back to life and strength yesterday. And this brings me to asking this passing question, what content are you consuming on the (Not so) world wide web?

I had another moment of epiphany this morning when I dished my breakfast and was about settling in to eat. Because I didn’t want to have a lazy Sunday where I don’t get to reply my emails or write some articles, I wanted to eat by my work table while looking at my PC or perhaps, typing away.elsie godwin work table - elsieisy blog

I placed my food tray on the table somehow and walked backed to the kitchen to get water. While I was walking back, my gut was telling me I didn’t place the tray properly and that it could fall off. And what came to mind was, ‘Oh my God, I am definitely not ready to mop this floor today’ while rushing back to make sure I placed it properly. As I settled in to eat, I realized that there are people in this same country whose problem won’t be mopping the floor if such happens but they might have to go hungry for the morning or even the rest of the day cos there isn’t an alternative.

I paused, said a prayer and smiled. I mean, life is tough on everyone. In the words of Onyeka Onwenu again from the clip above, “We all have very interesting lives. There is no one person without challenges. God has given each and every one of us the grace to carry a cross or the challenges. You may not know or see those challenges but it doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

No matter the situation you find yourself, someone wants to be like you. Your life is somebody’s prayer point. You once prayed for the things you have now. Soak it in and enjoy it while working and praying for more. I know there are times I feel sad & lonely, I mean, I am only human. I miss my mom so much sometimes and I wish I had it better. But look at me, an ordinary orphan and the things I have been able to achieve for myself. I might not be on FORBES LIST yet. Heck I don’t think I am even on any list right now…But I am thankful for life and for you. You are here, reading my words. That’s enough.
