Delta Govt. sets up Special Unit against rape, domestic violence

The Delta State government has taken proactive measures to speedily handle and prosecute offenders by setting up a Special Unit to handle the vices.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor who made the disclosure recently during an enlarged meeting with staff of the ministry, said the move was well articulated in line with the thinking of the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.

He condemned all forms of violence against women including rape and gave an assurance that the state was duty-bound to protect its citizen including women and children from the menace.

Mrakpor explained that the creation of the Unit in the Department of Public Prosecution was to serve as a special prosecution line mainly for rape and domestic violence, adding that the innovation was aimed at fast tracking all rape related cases and ensure that offenders are punished to serve as deterrent to others.

While charging female lawyers and other stakeholders to join government in the campaign, the Justice Commissioner appealed to victims of rape to always report such incident to the police and come forward to give evidence before the court as prosecution witnesses, saying that their safety and protection during and after trials was guaranteed.
